During 2007 to 2009, the production of PE film fell by 1 million tonnes. Nearly half of the loss recovered in 2010, as reported in the ninth edition of the Guide to The Polyethylene Film Extrusion Industry in Europe. With the demand for more than 7.5 million tonnes for 2010 PE film extrusion is still one of the largest plastic processing sectors, accounting for 19% of polymer consumption in Europe in 2010.
The recession influenced the number of companies in Europe. Compared with the AMI’s report, 5% fewer companies listed with the UK, France, Scandinavia and Benelux declined in numbers. Manufacturers of carrier bags, heavy duty sacks and building films became less and food packaging suppliers performed better as there was less contraction in demand from this sector through the downturn.
The PE film industry in Europe had to adapt to these changing needs, which in turn has seen a shift in the importance of end used applications. Stretch film is still the largest single application in volume terms. It is because stretch packaging film becomes one of the most cost effective means of protecting goods while they are in transit. The bags and sacks market has had differing trends between the various sectors. The need for carrier bags has seen a steady decline because of environmental pressures, incentives for consumers to reuse bags, shops beginning to charge for carrier bags and increasing quantity of imported bags from Asia. AMI in the comparison indicate within their guide, that the market for refuse sacks been driven by continued growth moves more recycling and sorting garbage.

An important change has been the growing demand for more sophisticated multi-layer films and technical co-extrusions which now account for 9% of PE film production in Europe, compared with just 5% in AMI’s previous edition. In the guide approximately 10% of the companies listed are capable of manufacturing 5 or more multilayer films.
The distribution of PE film production in Europe has not fundamentally changed the previous version guide AMI figures quoted. Italy still has the largest amount of PE film production with Germany in second place. However, the number of operations in the company has more than 100 in Italy compared with Germany, in Italy, reflecting the relatively fragmented industry structure. Poland leads the way in the EU, accounting for about 50% of film production in the region and the largest number of film extrusion machine.
As the industry downturn AMI forecasting that production lines will move with the relevant European GDP growth. To 2015, an average annual growth of about 2-3% / year, will result in more than 8.7 million tons of industrial processing.
